ADI site crucial to Greens preferences in Sydney West 05.09

The Greens NSW have warned the Labor Party that the future of the ADI site will be a key factor in winning a preferences recommendation from The Greens in crucial Western Sydney marginal seats.

“We’re calling for a public commitment from Labor that a Latham Government would take concrete steps to protect more of the ADI site from developers,” said Greens NSW Senate candidate John Kaye.

“The Greens’ preference recommendation will reflect the people of Western Sydney’s desire to save as much of the ADI site as possible as nature reserve and parkland for their enjoyment and health.

“At the very least, we want to see a Latham Labor Government set up a macrofauna corridor in the Eastern Precinct. This would allow the ADI’s emus and kangaroos to range across the site.

“At the last Federal election the Government gave 150 hectares back to the people of Western Sydney, and we call on Mark Latham to at least match this.

“The Eastern Precinct is the most important part of the site for biodiversity and threatened species, so The Greens also want Labor to commit Federal funding to turn the Eastern Precinct Regional Park into a conservation area.

“The Greens are also calling for an independent study of endangered species on the entire site, a Federal inquiry into contamination on the site, and a review of remediation procedures.

“We have invited Mark Latham to visit the ADI site and see for himself what a priceless asset it could be for Western Sydney if we take steps to save it.

“The Greens hope that Labor will listen to the community’s demand for quality open space, and deliver the goods,” said Mr Kaye.

The Greens candidate for Greenway, Astrid O’Neill, said that she was planning to walk in 'Sydney’s Secret Garden' on Sunday 12 September.

“I invite anyone interested in the ADI site to walk with Greens candidates to see its beauty and value,,” said Ms O’Neill.

“I will be walking with the Greens candidate for Chifley, Debbie Robertson, candidate Gab Worrall for Lindsay, and Greens MLC Sylvia Hale.

“We want to draw the ALP’s attention to this site as its future is important in determining how Greens preferences will flow in Greenway.”
