Greens call for plastic-free future 23.08

Debbie Robertson, The Greens candidate for Chifley in the coming federal election, has had plastic shopping bags up to her neck.

Ms Robertson spend most of the weekend of Planet Ark’s 40-hour “plastic bag famine” reminding people why plastic bags are such an environmental disaster.

“The Green Woolies Enviro bag is a commendable first step, but it’s not the long-term solution. Manufacturing the Enviro bags causes pollution, and the bags are made of poly propylene, which is not very biodegradable.

“Cotton bags are not the answer either, because producing cotton uses too much water and pesticide. We have to look for alternatives that suit our environment.

“Hemp is the ideal fabric: it’s tough, and hemp farmers use little water or pesticide.”

Hemp fabric supermarket shopping bags are already being made in Mt Druitt. They will be on exhibition at the Tregear and Mt Druitt Festivals run by Blacktown Council, and carry the banner “Jobz for Oz”.

Mrs Davis of Tregear said: “They not only look smart and fashionable, but they’re made here. Sure, they cost a bit more – but they’ll last for years. What price do you put on a clean environment?”
