Greens in Blacktown & Mt. Druitt

Follow the Money Trail
Every year, big corporations donate millions of dollars to the major political parties, buying access and influence that ordinary Australians can't afford. Use this site to find out which companies have donated, how much, and which political parties are the big winners. The Greens believe that until these donations are reformed, governments will continue to make decisions that favour big business over communities. Get informed and get involved.

Federal Election Campaign 2004

Chifley

Debbie Robertson - Greens Candidate for Chifley at the 2004 Federal election

Local Resident Debbie Robertson is the endorsed cadidate for The Greens for the Electorate of Chifley in the upcoming Federal Election.

Debbie Robertson has lived in the Mt. Druitt area for over 20 years. She is married with four sons aged 18-24, is the carer of an autistic son and is strongly involved in disability issues.

Debbie is the current Secretary/Deputy Convenor of the Blacktown Greens group and has been actively involved in local politics since joining The Greens in 2002.

“The Greens firmly believe that both national and local issues matter in federal elections.

“For this reason The Greens are committed to fighting to save medicare, public education and the environment, preserving the entire ADI site at St. Marys and maintaining full services at Mt. Druitt hospital.”

Debbie is concerned about the lack of public services and employment opportunities in Chifley and believes that the tax cuts of the major parties could be put to much better use funding services and public infrastructure that will benefit the whole community.

Debbie believes we need to think about initiating more opportunities for our children.

“There are so many talented young people who are missing out on a good education because both the federal Liberal and the state Labor governments have not provided adequate funds for local public schools.

“The government could also turn this situation around by increasing university and TAFE places, abolishing university fees and establishing appropriate eco-toursim ventures at places like the ADI site at St. Marys.

“Quality health care should be affordable for all Australians. The Greens will fight to save the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme that keeps the costs of prescription medicines down.

“The best way that you can tell the Liberal and Labor parties that a 30 per cent hike in the cost of prescription medicines is not acceptable is to vote 1 for The Greens.”

Debbie also believes that a mental health unit should be established in the Chifley area as a top priority to combat the growing needs of those with mental illness.

“The Greens are well known for opposing the war in Iraq. In the Senate The Greens were successful in censoring the Howard Government.

“Our hard-working Green Senators continue to expose the flaws in both major parties positions on the war and terrorism. It’s clear that long term answers to war and terrorism will be found by tackling injustice and poverty. Australia needs the strong, principled voice of The Greens in the Senate more than ever.

“Australia has a reputation for being a compassionate, inclusive and multicultural society. The Greens actively support the rights and interests of asylum seekers and refugees and are on record as opposing mandatory detention and the racist immigration policies of both the major parties. We will continue to fight for a more humanitarian and responsible approach on this crucial question of human rights.

“This election is the turning point for us all. Vote Howard out: Support The Greens in the 2004 Federal Election.”

Press Release 23rd August 2004 - Plastic Bags strangle Australia

The Chifley electorate covers the outer metropolitan western Sydney suburbs of Blackett, Blacktown (western parts), Colyton, Dharruk, Doonside, Eastern Creek, Emerton, Glendenning, Hassall Grove, Hebersham, Huntingwood, Lethbridge Park, Minchinbury, Mt Druitt, Plumpton, Rooty Hill, St Marys, Shalvey, Shanes Park, Tregear, Whalan, Willmot and Woodcroft.

The electorate covers an area of approximately 110 sq km and has around 83 000 electors.

Chifley is one of the safest seats in the country but has seen the ALP vote steadily drop over the years because the time serving non-achievers the ALP have dumped on Chifley have allowed succesive governments to neglect the area by failing to give voice to needs and aspirations of the local population. Voting 1 for the Greens in Chifley will tell the next government that the area and its people can no longer be ignored.

Greenway

Astrid O'Neill - Greens candidate for Greenway at the 2004 Federal Election

Long term Western Sydney education and environmental activist Astrid O'Neill has been endorsed as The Greens candidate for the Federal Electorate of Greenway.

Astrid and her partner have lived, worked and raised their family in Western Sydney for 35 years. Astrid’s employment in TAFE has included teaching business studies and law at Penrith and Baulkham Hills Colleges, and Deputy Principal at Blacktown TAFE.

“The staff and students at Blacktown were fantastic, and have taught me so much about social justice and equity. TAFE can make such a huge difference in people’s lives,” Astrid said.

Astrid O’Neill is also an active unionist, and represents NSW TAFE teachers on the National TAFE Council and other bodies. She was President and Federation Representative of her union branch at Blacktown College, and led the fight to force TAFE to tackle an asbestos problem in the college.

“The whole college supported me on the asbestos issue,” Astrid said. “They also supported me when I blew the whistle on an attempt by a previous government to cut funding for vocational courses by 10% across TAFE in NSW by stealth and lies. I was quoted in the media about the impact of the cuts on Blacktown. I was reprimanded, and only avoided being sacked because of my high profile within the union.”

“Now we’re facing an election where truth in government is a core issue. Mr Howard cannot escape the facts: he lied to the Australian people about children overboard and the Iraq war.

“The Greens want better public services and infrastructure in Greenway, instead of tax cuts that only benefit the well-off. We need to restore the values of a fair, tolerant and compassionate Australia,” Astrid said.

Astrid is also active in reconciliation, asylum seeker and social justice issues, and believes The Greens are more supportive of the labour movement than the present NSW Labor Government.

“We don’t have the big bucks of the two major parties, and we need volunteers and support from the people of Greenway,” Astrid said.

The Greenway electorate covers the outer metropolitan western and north western Sydney suburbs of Acacia Gardens, Blacktown (eastern parts), Dean Park, Glenwood, Kings Langley, Kings Park, Lalor Park, Marayong, Marsden Park, Prospect, Parklea, Quakers Hill, Riverstone, Schofields, Seven Hills and Stanhope Gardens.

The electorate covers an area of approximately 120 sq km and has around 86 000 electors

Formerly a safe ALP balliwick represented by do-nothing party hacks, the recent influx of people into new residential areas has turned Greenway into a must win marginal for the major parties. Casting a first preference vote for the Greens candidate in Greenway will send a clear message that the people of western Sydney are no longer prepared to be taken for granted.
